It is played in private games, in casinos, and on the Internet. It is a popular pastime among many and a card game of skill and strategy. It has been called the national card game of the United States, and its play and jargon permeate American culture.<\/p>\n<p>There are hundreds of variations of the game, but most of them follow a similar pattern. A player begins by placing an amount of money into the pot. He then may call, raise, or fold his hand.<\/p>\n<p>A player may bet on any combination of five cards in his hand and the community cards on the table. The player who has the highest-ranking poker hand wins the pot.<\/p>\n<p>The best poker hand is a royal flush, which consists of an Ace, King, Queen, Jack and ten of the same suit. Other winning hands include a straight, four of a kind, and three of a kind. Two pair consist of two matching cards of one rank and another unmatched card, while a high card is any card that is higher than the others in the poker hand.<\/p>\n<p>In some games, players may agree to establish a special fund, known as a kitty, for the purpose of buying new decks of cards or paying for food and drinks.
