The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game played by two or more players. The objective is to win the pot, which consists of all bets made in a deal. A player can win the pot by having a winning 5-card poker hand or by betting so much that the other players fold.

At the start of each hand, each player puts chips into the pot, representing money. Each player can call a bet, raise a bet or fold at any time during the hand. If a player does not want to call or raise, they must fold their cards and forfeit any chance of winning that round.

After the dealer has shuffled the deck, cards are dealt out to each player. Each player must make a best 5-card poker hand from their own two personal cards and the five community cards on the table. Each community card has a rank, and the best hand is one with five matching ranks in a straight, flush or three of a kind.

When the betting rounds are over, players reveal their hands and the player with the best hand wins the pot. If there is a tie, the highest card breaks the tie (e.g., five aces beats five kings). The remaining chips in the pot are then distributed among all players who did not fold. Over the course of many rounds, players can run out of money and drop out of the game.
