They often use chips instead of actual money to make it easier for players to keep track of their winnings and losses. Casinos also have a security department that patrols the premises and responds to calls for assistance or reports of suspicious activity.

Investment banks have acquired and operated a number of them, and hotel chains, real estate developers, and other businesspeople have realized that the casino industry is lucrative. In addition, federal crackdowns and the threat of losing a casino license at even the faintest hint of mob involvement have helped to deter mafia-style control.
