A Glossary of Poker Terms and Definitions

Poker is a card game in which players independently try to assemble the most valuable hand of cards possible—traditionally, to win cash or poker chips. It is played in many variants, each with a different rule set and goal. A hand typically consists of five cards, and the player with the best five-card combination wins the pot.

In poker, like in life, a key to winning is knowing how to make good decisions under uncertainty. That means learning how to estimate the probability of different scenarios and weigh your options to maximize profit. It also requires a certain level of comfort with risk-taking and an ability to read the tells of other players’ betting patterns.

The first step in mastering Poker is understanding the terminology used to describe the game and the players’ strategies. This glossary of poker terms and definitions can help you get up to speed on the lingo used at the tables.

Before the first hand is dealt, all players must contribute an ante to the pot. This is similar to the blind, but it happens before a hand is even dealt and it gives the pot a value right off the bat.

After all the players have their cards, there is a showdown in which they reveal them and evaluate their hands. The player with the highest hand wins the pot. There are 10 different types of poker hands, which are ranked from highest to lowest: Straight, Flush, Four of a Kind, Full House, Two Pairs and Three of a Kind.
